I planned on writing a
mini history of legendary Congolese group Langa Langa Stars in my column in The Beat magazine a couple of
years back. Part of the reason for
the delay has been the amount of research involved in charting the complicated
story of this band and its main protagonists.
As part of the Langa Langa Stars story I was going to write about the
singer Dindo Yogo who was a vocalist
integral to that group during its finest years. Not only was Dindo Yogo a member of Langa Langa Stars but he
also spent time with Papa Wemba’s Viva la Musica and Zaïko Langa Langa, in
addition to leading his own excellent group Nguaka Ayé.

News reached me from Kinshasa on 23 August 2000 that Dindo had just died,
earlier that morning, from unspecified causes. “Djangi” Dindo Yogo had one of the most distinctive
voices of Congolese music. He was
known as “La Voix Cassée” (the broken voice) and there is no mistaking his
rough, tremulous, but extremely musical warble.
In addition to his fine voice he was a composer of great merit who was
respected for his intelligent and thought provoking lyrics. This tribute is in the form of a brief résumé of his
musical career and an attempted discography highlighting his finest musical
achievements.
