Park's first annual festival of Haitian music revealed the diversity and
popularity of modern Haitian music in New York City. The festival
highlighted the New Generation of Haitian Musicians, including the Rara
music of Boukman Eksperyans, the Queen of Haitian song Emeline Michel and
Brooklyn favorites 2 Sweet whose music combined elements of compas and rap.
Mainstays Tabou Combo and Zin closed the show. |

Michel's voice melodious voice rose and fell above the steady Afro-Caribbean
rhythms and swayed the crowd at Celebrate Brooklyn. Ms Michel, is one
of a new generation of Haitian musicians whose music reinvigorates
traditional rhythms with contemporary social, political, and inspirational
themes. The band included Jericho Goura and Serge Decius on
Percussion, Makarios Cesaire on Guitar, Gashford Guillaume on drums,

Brooklyn favorite, featuring Junior Edmond (lead vocals), Alex Chamblin
(vocals and bass), Ivan Brice (keyboards), Charles Senat (guitar) and Jah-P
(rapper). The music was a unique and invigorating fast-paced blend of
Compas and Rap and had the crowd on its feet. |
