| Dindo
Yogo as session singer
|
 |
In addition to his highly successful
solo releases there are a large number of releases that include Dindo as a guest
vocalist. I have attempted to list
all of these sessions but inevitably there may be some that I have missed. |
| 1.
Le Choc 85 avec ses vedettes du
moment (IDD 2538). One of my
favourite albums with four tracks featuring singers Dindo, King Kester Emeneya,
Mopero and Nzaya Nzayadio, and guitarist Manuaku.
Two of the songs, “Presence” and “Chacun Pour Soi” have been
issued on a cd Succes Gloires – Oncle
Nzaya Nzayadio (Firma Exousia FE 003). |
| 2.
Defao & Big Stars –Benson –
Philly Mbala (TON 001). Dindo,
Djuna Djanana, Reddy Amisi and Luciana guest with Defao on the track “Philly
Mbala”. |
| 3.
Defao & Big Stars – Simbaka
Motema (ANC 095A). Remix of the
above album. |
| 4.
Le Duc Herode/Koffi Olomide & L’orch. Quartier Latin – Glamour
(BMP 950046). Two good songs
with Dindo. |
| 5.
Reddy Amisi – Prudence (Blue
Silver 50380-2). Three fantastic
songs featuring Dindo – “Rendez-vous”, “Prudence” and “Yves Makamu”. |
| 6.
Pacha & Viva la Musica – Voyage
ya Poto (BMP 950058). Dindo on
“De Pasco Dinga”, “Sen zele” and “Felizance”. |
| 7.
Reddy Amisi – Ziggy (Galaxie
GP 97.10). Dindo on back-up vocals
throughout. |
| 8.
Viva la Musica de Papa Wemba signé Kito Dembala – Mokili Pitié (MJ 06). Dindo
on one track from this great cd by one of Viva’s lesser known singers. |
| 9.
Modogo Gian Franco – Piccadilly (SMCD
11681). Dindo features heavily on
Modogo’s brilliant fifth release. |
| 10. Djo Maly Zaïko Langa Langa &
Langa Langa Stars – Non Stop (Ngapy
915 DJ). Poorly produced medley of
bass legend Djo Mali’s hits. |
| 11. Adamo, Dindo
Yogo, Defao avec Hondo
Cava – Top Niveau (BABI 009).
One of my favourite obscurities. Choc
Star style (Defao and Roxy) with the added benefit of Dindo’s voice. |
| 12. Dalaï Lama Zico Man – Bomoyi
ya Moto (MKZ 29566). Bruxelles
based session with Dindo guesting. |
| 13. Dindo Yogo,
Endho, Roxy Tshimpaka,
Nono Atalaku & Zaïko Langa Langa – Sacrifices
(Cascade no number - 1995). One
of several mid-nineties Zaïko unofficial “nzong-zing” sessions. |
| 14. Zaïko Nkolo Mboka & Baroza – Saisie
en Douane...20 ans déjà (SG 96006). Another
unofficial Zaïko session, this time led by the late Zaïko soloist Bansimba
Baroza. |
| 15. Fale-Fale Japanes de Victoria
Eleison – Mira Dora Vol. 2 (SD009 3
95). Dindo guests on good session
from ex-Rumba Ray and then Victoria Eleison “B” team vocalist. |
| 16. Ngouma Lokito – Talisman (CDS 8822). All-star
lineup on 1996 solo album from super-session bass guitarist. |
| 17. Alain Makaba – Pile ou Face (Sonodisc CDS 8809).
Former Wenge Musica guitarist’s solo debut. Dindo sings on tracks with JB M’piana, Abby Surya, Luciana
and King Kester Emeneya. |
| 18. Madilu System – Le Nouveau Madilu System (ND025).
In celebrated company (Wuta Mayi, Nyboma, Madilu) Dindo sings on
“Marie”. |
| 19. Guet a Pens (Bouddha Enyuka Mayino)
(Sonima no number -1996). Exquisite
Paris session with Dindo singing alongside Pompon Kuleta, Monglisha, Luciana and
lovely Abby Surya. |
| 20. Benz Petrole – L’heure de Vérité (3016682-Sun Records 1996).
Super line-up on the first of composer Benz Petrole’s highly
recommended sessions. |
| 21. Aimedo Star-Nyura – Coup
d’Eclat (Cascade no number). Great
super-star session released under the name of one of the former drummers from
Langa Langa Stars. |
| 22. Mide Pablinto – Dilemme (MP18). Dindo
guests on another of my “obscurity” favourites. |
| 23. Awilo Longomba – Moto Pamba (JIP 073). First
solo release from drummer turned Pan-African Soukous dance star.
Quality vocalists like Dindo help toward the huge success of Awilo. |
| 24. Jamaitha – Dans le Monde (SM 97002). Dindo
duets with former New Look Libanko singer on the wonderful title track. |
| 25. Flaïsha Mani – Nsah (CD AF018-371). Good
Soukous-Zouk session – but Dindo is virtually inaudible. |
| 26. J.L. Vuvu – Identification (L.LM.P.M 01). London
based session with both Dindo and Evoloko Jocker guesting. |
| 27. Théo Blaise Kounkou – Freedom
Spirit (TBK no number - 1997). Dindo
guests on one song on TBK 1997 “come-back” album. |
| 28. Jolino “Ya Mudefend Defend” – Faut
pas desesperer (Sonima CD 1163). A
personal favourite with guest appearances from Papa Wemba. Bozi Boziana and
Dindo. |
| 29. Le Prophète Congolais Franck-Day
– Difference/Nvilli Tchybamba (Sonima
SM 1118). Another obscure jewel.
Features Dindo, Stino and guitarist Yves Demoukousse.
Viva style with “dangerous” voices. |
| 30. Maïka Munan – African Swinger (66965-2-Melodie).
Dindo guests on two songs on Maïka’s super-session album. |
| 31. Luciana de Mingongo – Sang
Bleu “Aziza” (LD 011 –
Ngoyarto). Again Dindo teams up
with Reddy Amisi to provide support on Luciana’s exquisite release. |
| 32. Le Prophète Mayiza & Empire
Bakuba – Le Roi de Moto (African
Business Center no number). Bakuba
“B” team singer with an interesting release. |
| 33. Evoloko Jocker – Megamix Vol. 1 (FDB 300292). Dindo
re-united with former Langa Langa Stars colleague for a spirited run-through of Evoloko’s hits. |
| 34. Aimelia – Constat (UP 001). One
of the best releases of year 2000 features Dindo on a couple of tracks. |
| 35. Scola Miel – Chacun Pour Tous (PMP 001). Dindo
duets with former Anti-Choc chanteuse on another of my year 2000 Top Ten
releases. |
| 36. Choc Langa Langa – Tosengoli Bango II “Apocalypse” (JP.018.00).
Former Zaïko colleague Malage de Lugendo leads this Bruxelles
“nzong-zing” session. |
| 37. Awilo Longomba – Kafou Kafou (JIP 181). Dindo
guests on “Amour Perdu”, the best song on Awilo’s third solo album. |

| At
the time of Dindo’s death in August 2000 he was just finishing his new album
“+ d’Amour” and, out of respect for the family, the producer delayed the
release until late in October. Dindo’s
final work is a cleanly produced, star-filled release.
Guest singers, stalwarts to recent Paris sessions, include Amelia,
Monglisha, Luciana and Abby Surya. And musicians include guitarist Caen Madoka, Alexis Azulino,
Sec Bidens and Pepé
Felly
Manuaku. My initial reaction to the
disc has been slight disappointment, not for Dindo’s contribution, but for the
light, clinical production that at times drifts far too close to a middle of the
road Zouk style. Most of the
animations, too, are not only derivative but are actually out of tune and
discordant. The voice of Dindo Yogo,
though, is as strong as ever and there are some good moments.
Of particular interest is the track “Theodore” on which he
poignantly reprises “C’est ça
la vie” (life’s like that) and “Cadeau de Dieu”, the song in which he
originally thanked the Lord for bestowing upon him his great vocal gift. |

Lola Dindo, now a member of Quartier Latin
| There is a phrase that those of us who
are fanatics of Zaïko Langa Langa often repeat “Elengi ya Zaïko suka te”
– The spirit of Zaïko is forever. As
part of the family of Zaïko some of that spirit will always be with Dindo Yogo
and his music will consequently never be forgotten.
His son, Lola Dindo, is currently performing as part of Koffi Olomide’s
Quartier Latin and still sings with exactly the same vocal timbre as his father.
In fact I saw Lola perform with Koffi exactly one week before Dindo’s
death and every time that Lola sang a solo a wry smile of nostalgia crept across
my face, little realising the terrible news that we would soon hear.
|
| Dindo Yogo was a charming and always
calm and modest individual who was liked and respected by his fellow musicians.
His death is a deeply sad loss to Congolese music. |
